Why San Francisco businesses lose the call

828,000 people. 47 square miles. Three spots on the map.

The Census Bureau counts 827,526 people in San Francisco on 46.7 square miles of land, about 17,700 to the square mile. 63% of households rent, 34% of residents were born outside the US, and the median household earns $139,801 a year. From the Marina and Pacific Heights to the Mission, the Sunset and Bayview, it is a city of tight, distinct neighborhoods. When a pipe bursts in a 1920s flat, a lease goes wrong or a move comes up on two weeks’ notice, people pick up a phone and search, and Google answers with three businesses on the map and ten links below it. If you aren’t in those spots, the job goes to someone who is.

The top three take the calls.

Most people pick from the three businesses Google shows on the map. Fourth place still has a listing, but far fewer people ever see it.

Google Maps is local. San Francisco packs dozens of neighborhoods into 47 square miles.

Google favors businesses close to the searcher. Ranking in the Marina doesn’t mean you show up in the Mission, the Outer Sunset or Bayview.

San Francisco search, month by month

Flowers in February. Taxes in April. Bed bugs in August. Every season, a new rush.

We pulled twelve months of Google search volume for San Francisco. Florist goes from 1,900 searches a month to 5,400 in February and March. Wedding venue climbs from 1,600 in December to 4,400 in March and April. Tax preparer runs from 70 in November to 1,300 in April, then drops to 110 in May. Divorce lawyer goes from 480 to 1,900 in May, solar from 170 to 720 in May and August, and bed bugs from 1,900 in winter to 4,400 in August. Whatever the season, the businesses already in the top three when demand spikes are the ones that take the work.

Accountants and tax preparers: rank by January.

Tax preparer goes from 210 searches in January to 1,000 in March and 1,300 in April, then falls to 110 in May. CPA runs 880 to 1,600 a month at around $22 a click, and bookkeeping around $33 a click. Rankings take longer than one tax season to build, so our 60-day page-one guarantee gives you a date to plan around: start in the fall, be in the top three by February.

Florists, venues and caterers: spring is booked in winter.

Florist peaks at 5,400 searches in February and March, and wedding venue at 4,400 in March and April, when the year’s events get booked. A catering click costs around $19 on Google Ads in San Francisco. Hair salon and nail salon each average 8,100 searches a month, and pilates 5,400.

No bill for every click.

On Google Ads in San Francisco, a click costs around $194 for personal injury attorney, $146 for DUI lawyer, $139 for divorce lawyer, $86 for emergency plumber, $60 for wrongful termination lawyer and $39 each for moving company, therapist and garage door repair. A page-one ranking keeps bringing in leads without a per-click bill.

Two construction workers bolting a new steel frame into the open garage of a pastel San Francisco apartment building with bay windows, during a seismic retrofit

Loma Prieta, 5:04 p.m., October 17, 1989.

Magnitude 6.9. Almost 5,000 buildings to fix.

At 5:04 in the afternoon on October 17, 1989, the Loma Prieta earthquake struck the Santa Cruz Mountains, about 60 miles southeast of San Francisco. It killed 63 people, injured 3,757 and caused about $6 billion in property damage. In San Francisco, part of the Bay Bridge collapsed and liquefaction badly damaged buildings in the Marina District. The buildings that fared worst were the city’s classic wood-frame apartments with open garages on the ground floor, known as soft-story buildings. In 2013 the city made strengthening them mandatory: almost 5,000 buildings, home to about 111,000 people. Structural engineers, contractors, foundation crews and remodelers did that work. Today an owner who needs that kind of work does what everyone does: searches, and calls one of the first names Google shows. Seismic retrofit averages 260 searches a month in San Francisco at around $16 a click on Google Ads, a structural engineer click costs around $26 and a bathroom remodel click around $36. Being one of those first names is the job.

SEO in a city of renters

235,000 households rent. Every lease is a search.

Of San Francisco’s 371,841 households, 235,275 rent their home, 63% of the city, according to the Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey. Every move in and move out sends people to Google: for movers, storage, cleaners, locksmiths and handymen, and on the other side of the lease for property managers and lawyers. In San Francisco, moving company averages 1,000 searches a month at around $39 a click, storage units runs 590 to 1,900 at around $18, property management averages 590 at around $18, eviction lawyer runs 90 to 320 and landlord attorney costs around $19 a click.

Win the week of the move.

A move in San Francisco is booked in days, not months. Movers, cleaners, storage and locksmiths win it by being in the top three on Google Maps when the search happens, with reviews that answer the question before the call: how soon, how much, and do they know these stairs.

Both sides of the lease.

Renters search for tenant lawyers and owners search for landlord attorneys and property managers. They are different searches with different winners, so each side gets its own pages, its own keywords and its own spot on the map.

New to the city, no referrals yet.

34% of San Franciscans were born outside the US and many more arrive from other states. People new to a neighborhood can’t ask a neighbor who to call yet, so Google Maps, the reviews on it and Google’s AI answers decide who gets the job.

How we measure

Your ranking, from the Marina to the Excelsior.

Google Maps doesn’t show everyone the same results. Someone searching in the Marina sees a different top three from someone in the Mission, and someone in the Outer Sunset sees another. In a city this dense, the map can change from one hill to the next. So we don’t check your ranking from one spot. We run your searches from a grid of points across every neighborhood and city you serve, and you get that map back every month: green where you’re in the top three, red where you aren’t yet. Then we go after the red.

  • A grid, not a guess

Your real position from dozens of points across San Francisco.

  • Fixes aimed at the gaps

Neighborhood and city pages, listings and links for the places you don’t win yet.

  • Check it yourself

Areas we serve in San Francisco

All 47 square miles. And across the Bay.

Most agencies write one “San Francisco” page and hope it covers 828,000 people. It doesn’t. Google shows a different top three in the Marina than in the Mission, and a different one again in the Outer Sunset or Bayview. Hills, fog and a few blocks of distance split the city into dozens of small markets. So we plan area by area: the neighborhoods you already win, the ones close enough to take next, and the ones worth a page of their own.

FAQ

San Francisco SEO, answered.

What San Francisco business owners ask us before they hire an SEO company.

Book my free strategy call
01 How much does SEO cost in San Francisco?

Our plans for Google Maps and the main Google results (local and organic SEO) run $1,497 to $5,000 a month, and $5,000+ a month when you have several websites. Every plan is month to month and includes AI SEO. Where you land depends on your service, how many neighborhoods and Bay Area cities you want to win and how strong the businesses above you are. You get your exact number on the free strategy call, and the prices are published on our website before you ever talk to us.

02 How long does SEO take in San Francisco?

You should see the first improvements within 20 days. If you don’t see visible improvement in your key metrics within the first 20 days, we refund $200 on top of returning your payment for that period. If your qualifying keywords aren’t on the first page of Google within 60 days, we keep working for free until they are.

03 Is San Francisco too competitive for SEO?

Some searches are crowded and others are wide open, and the only way to know is to look. Competition is set search by search and neighborhood by neighborhood, not for the whole city. “Plumber san francisco” and “plumber noe valley” are different fights with different winners. On the call we search yours live, show you who holds each spot and agree the qualifying keywords our 60-day guarantee covers, in writing.

04 Is SEO worth it for a small business in San Francisco?

Yes, if you’re already doing $20,000 a month or more and want more of the same work. Ads charge you for every click, and in San Francisco a personal injury attorney click costs around $194, a divorce lawyer click around $139 and an emergency plumber click around $86. A page-one ranking keeps bringing in leads without a bill for every click, and our guarantees put dates on it: visible improvement in 20 days, qualifying keywords on page one in 60.

05 What does a San Francisco SEO company actually do?

Eight jobs, all done for you: we set up and run your Google Business Profile, grow your Google reviews, fix your local listings, fix your website so Google can read it, build a page for each service, neighborhood and city you serve, earn mentions on trusted websites, get you into AI answers, and show you every ranking each month so you can check it on Google yourself.

06 Why hire an SEO company that guarantees results in San Francisco?

Because most don’t put a date on anything. We do it in writing: if you don’t see visible improvement in your key metrics in the first 20 days, we refund $200 on top of returning your payment for that period, and if your qualifying keywords aren’t on page one of Google in 60 days, we keep working for free until they are. Our prices are published, every plan is month to month, and every ranking we report is one you can search yourself.

07 Do you need an office in San Francisco to rank my business here?

No. Google ranks your business, its listing, its reviews and its website, not your agency’s address. We check your rankings from San Francisco itself, neighborhood by neighborhood, so you see what your customers see. Our clients rank #1 in cities we have never had an office in: Angkorscape for “luxury landscape design” in Seattle, Sanjay Grover MD on Google Maps in Newport Beach, and Ranallo on Google Maps in Massachusetts. What matters is results you can search yourself, with dates in writing.

08 Have you ranked businesses in California?

Yes. Sanjay Grover MD in Newport Beach went from #17 to #1 on Google Maps for “best plastic surgery near me” in 20 days, with seven of eight target searches in the top three. On the West Coast, Angkorscape is #1 for “luxury landscape design” in Seattle and named in Google’s AI answers. Maurice and Sons went from 18 of 19 searches outside the top 100 to 15 in the top three in 21 days. On the call, we show you results in your own industry.

09 Can you rank my business across all of San Francisco?

Yes, one step at a time. Google Maps favors businesses close to the person searching, so you win the neighborhoods around your address first. Then we build a page for each neighborhood you serve, check your ranking from a grid of points across them, and point your listings and mentions at the areas where you aren’t in the top three yet. A second location gets its own Google Business Profile, which is how Candace and Basil won two cities at once: their Mississauga store went from #10 to #1 on Google Maps while their Toronto store went from #18 to #2.

10 My business is in the Mission. Can I rank in the Marina or the Sunset too?

Yes, for the searches where Google looks past distance. On the map, people searching in the Marina mostly see businesses near the Marina, so we win your own area first and then build pages, links and mentions aimed at the areas you want next. In the main Google results below the map, where location counts for less, a strong page can rank across the whole city.

11 Can you rank me in Oakland, Daly City and the Peninsula too?

Yes. Oakland, Berkeley, Daly City, South San Francisco, San Mateo, Redwood City and the Marin towns are their own markets to Google. Each one you serve gets its own page and search targets, your listings carry every city you cover, and we track your ranking in every one of them each month.

12 Do you work with seismic retrofit contractors, engineers and remodelers?

Yes. After Loma Prieta, San Francisco made retrofits mandatory for almost 5,000 soft-story buildings, home to about 111,000 people, and that work still sends owners to Google. Seismic retrofit averages 260 searches a month at around $16 a click, a structural engineer click costs around $26 and a bathroom remodel click around $36. We build a page for each service and each neighborhood you cover, so an owner in the Richmond and a property manager in the Mission both find you.

13 Do you work with law firms in San Francisco?

Yes. Law has the most expensive clicks we measured here: around $194 for personal injury attorney, $146 for DUI lawyer, $139 for divorce lawyer and $60 for wrongful termination lawyer on Google Ads in San Francisco. Immigration lawyer runs 320 to 2,900 searches a month and employment lawyer 320 to 1,900. Ranallo went from #10 to #1 on Google Maps for “car accident attorneys near me” in 20 days, and Florida Probate Law Group is #1 for “Florida probate lawyer” statewide.

14 Do you work with landlords, property managers and tenant lawyers?

Yes, on both sides of the lease. 63% of San Francisco households rent, so the city runs on these searches: property management averages 590 a month at around $18 a click, eviction lawyer runs 90 to 320, tenant lawyer 50 to 140 and landlord attorney costs around $19 a click. Each side gets its own pages and its own keywords, because renters and owners search for different things.

15 Do you work with movers, storage and cleaning companies?

Yes. Moving company averages 1,000 searches a month in San Francisco at around $39 a click, storage units runs 590 to 1,900 and cleaning service averages 720. In a city where most people rent, moves come up fast, and the companies in the Google Maps top three with the best reviews take most of them.

16 Do you work with plumbers, electricians and locksmiths in San Francisco?

Yes. Plumber averages 3,600 searches a month in San Francisco and electrician 3,600, an emergency plumber click costs around $86 on Google Ads and a locksmith click around $21. Non-Stop Air Conditioning and Heating in Cape Coral has all 8 of its tracked searches in the Google Maps top three, and we’d run the same plan for a San Francisco trade.

17 Do you work with dentists, dermatologists and therapists?

Yes. Dentist near me runs 6,600 to 9,900 searches a month in San Francisco, dermatologist averages 2,400 and therapist 1,600 at around $39 a click. Clinics fight over the same few spots on the map in every neighborhood. Sanjay Grover MD went from #17 to #1 on Google Maps in 20 days, and Burloak Centre Dentistry is #1 for both emergency and cosmetic dental searches in Oakville.

18 When should accountants, florists and wedding venues start SEO?

Months before their season. Tax preparer goes from 70 searches in November to 1,300 in April, florist peaks at 5,400 in February and March, and wedding venue at 4,400 in March and April. Rankings take weeks to build, so the businesses that start in the fall are the ones in the top three when the rush comes.

19 Do you work with tech startups and SaaS companies in San Francisco?

Our guarantees and plans are built for businesses that serve customers in a place: the searches people make when they need a service near them, on Google Maps and in the main results. If your customers find you by searching for a local service, we’re a fit. If you sell software nationally, ask us on the call and we’ll tell you honestly whether our plans fit.

20 How do I choose an SEO company in San Francisco?

Ask every agency four things: what will move in 20 days, what will be on page one in 60, what happens if it isn’t, and which named clients you can search for yourself. Then ask for the price and how long the contract runs. We answer all of it in writing, with published prices, month-to-month plans and a 4.8 rating on Google from 197 reviews.

21 How do you optimize a Google Business Profile in San Francisco?

We choose the categories that match what your customers search, list every service, add real photos and post regular updates, and keep new reviews coming in with a reply to each one. Reviews are one of the signals Google weighs. Then we make sure your name, address and phone number match on every directory Google checks, so it trusts your San Francisco location.

22 I don’t have a storefront. Can I still show up on Google Maps in San Francisco?

Yes. Plumbers, movers, cleaners, contractors, locksmiths and dog walkers can run their Google Business Profile as a service-area business, with the address hidden and the areas they cover listed. Google still uses your business location when it decides who to show, so we build pages and mentions for every area you serve to carry you further.

23 Do you build backlinks for San Francisco businesses?

Yes. Google ranks the businesses other websites vouch for, so we earn mentions and links from San Francisco and Bay Area news, neighborhood and community sites, merchant associations, suppliers and partners. No spam, no link farms and nothing that could get your website penalized.

24 Should I use SEO or Google Ads in San Francisco?

Ads put you at the top today and stop the day you stop paying, and some San Francisco clicks are very expensive: around $194 for a personal injury attorney and $86 for an emergency plumber. SEO takes weeks to build, then keeps bringing in leads without a bill for every click. Many San Francisco businesses run ads while SEO builds. Local SEO gets you onto the map, regular SEO gets your website into the results below it, and every plan covers both.

25 Can you get my business into Google’s AI answers and ChatGPT?

AI SEO is included in every plan, and it works to get your business named when people ask Google’s AI or ChatGPT who to hire in San Francisco. EquityRich is cited in Google’s AI answers for “commercial mortgage Toronto”, and Angkorscape is named in Google’s AI answers for Seattle.

26 What will I see from you each month?

Every keyword we work on, where it stood the day we started and where it stands now, a ranking grid across the parts of San Francisco you serve, and what we did that month and what comes next. Every ranking is one you can search on Google yourself, measured against our 20-day and 60-day guarantees.

27 How do I reach you from San Francisco?

Call our US line on +1 619 558 3888, 9am to 5pm Eastern, which is 6am to 2pm in San Francisco, or book a free strategy call. Every strategy call runs on Google Meet, and we check your rankings from San Francisco itself, neighborhood by neighborhood, so you see what your customers see.

28 What happens on the free strategy call?

Thirty minutes on Google Meet. We search your service in San Francisco live, in the neighborhoods you serve, and show you who holds page one and the top three spots on Google Maps, why they’re there and what it would take to pass them. You keep the plan either way. The call is for businesses doing $20,000 a month or more.

29 Am I locked into a long contract?

No. Every plan is month to month, and results keep you here, not paperwork. We work with established businesses already doing $20,000 a month or more, and we take on 15 new clients a month so we can keep the ranking promises we make to the clients we already have.
