On January 20, 2026, with windchills in the single digits, a burst pipe forced air traffic controllers out of the main O’Hare tower a little after 1 a.m., and nearly 900 flights were delayed. In Auburn Gresham, water poured through an apartment building ceiling, and Pro Services Plumbing and Sewer said it was taking 10 percent more calls than average. Plumbers, heating companies and restoration crews all got the calls at once. Even in a normal year, plumber searches in Chicago run from 1,900 a month to 3,600, and furnace repair from 70 to 720. When the next freeze hits, people search, and they call the businesses Google shows first.
